What do you think of the new proposed Lake Vermilion State Park?

Gov. Tim Pawlenty today proposed creating a new 2,500-acre state park on Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota. It would be Minnesota's first new major state park in 28 years. What are your thoughts?

I am from Northern MN. Born and raised on the North Shore. Believe me I have seen what private development on these lakes and our forests has done. My wife and I have made just a couple of trips to Vermilion for some fishing and truly love this lake. The idea of a State Park on Vermilion would be HUGE. It would surely give the less fortunate people who can not afford a lake home a chance enjoy this great area. I am for a State Park!

I am for mortorized recreation. That does include ATV'S. I do own a 17ft boat with a 25hp Yamaha outboard(4-stroke). 2 Arctic Cat ATV's. There is a need to make these State Parks ATV Friendly.

The state park is a great idea, curbing the development on the east side; leaving those important spawning areas unharmed. But, the cost is very high. Funding the state park will be problematic. As it is, our existing state parks are under-funded, under-managed. Some even close at certain times. Truely a shame.

I have been going to Lake Vermilion on a regular basis ever since I was a little kid. "Vermils" is a beautiful lake, of which I've had the absolute privilege to enjoy spending time on, and am all for others to have the same opportunity as well. However, there are already a number of other ways for people to enjoy this lake, without having to rely on the state's taxpayers to fund a new state park. There is already a number of campgrounds throughout the lake and surrounding area, as well as affordable resorts. I have also heard estimates that if a new park was put in, there would be an increase in fishing pressure ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand people per week. There is already a new limit and slot on Vermils to deal with the pressure that already exists.....what kind of effect will all the new estimated pressure have on the fish population and other lake resources? Before any decision is made, the combination of the long term health of the lake and it's accessabilty to people that want to enjoy it both need to be taken into consideration. I have no idea what the estimated increase in pressure will do to lake dynamics, but I can say Vermilion is very accessable to people who want to go there right now as it is with no park.

I think putting a state park on the east end of vermilion is way past due. I can't wait!

I like the idea of a State Park on Lake Vermilion but I don't think the cost is worth it. I wish there was another way to preserve the land...
